The Process of Creating a Crown is Truly an Art.

Crowns can be made from porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or a full gold crown. To maintain a natural look and feel a porcelain finished crown is best, as it can be matched to the shade of your other teeth. It usually takes 2-3 visits to the dentist to install a crown.

Crowns offer the following advantages:

  • Provide additional support to damaged teeth
  • Mask dental flaws such as misshapen teeth
  • Discreetly blend in with surrounding teeth
  • Support a tooth that was damaged by tooth decay
  • Restore a tooth after a root canal
  • Anchor a dental bridge
  • Crowns are durable and last about 10-15 years

On the first visit, the denist will take an impression of your tooth so that when the new tooth is made, it will match what you had. The tooth will be reshaped so that the crown can be placed over it.

The impressions or scans are sent to a dental lab where the crown will be manufactured. The crown is usually returned to your dentist’s office in two to three weeks. Dr Ras will select the shade that most closely matches the color of the neighboring teeth.

Dr. Ras will remove the temporary crown and check the fit and color of the permanent crown. If everything is acceptable, a local anesthetic will be used to numb the tooth and the new crown will be permanently cemented in place.

Questions & Answers

Do dental crowns hurt?

Thanks to the local anesthesia, there is no pain at all during the crown procedure. There may be a little soreness or pain in the gums after the procedure has been completed but this typically does not last very long and your teeth will be feeling better and stronger than ever in no time.

What are the benefits of dental crowns?

Crowns offer a solution to restore the structure, strength, and appearance of your teeth. Teeth tend to crack, decay and discolor over time and a crown is able to restore your tooth back to its normal function, making it easier to chew, bite, and of course, smile with confidence.

What kind of maintenance is involved in having a dental crown?

Once your crown is placed it’s important to keep on top of your oral hygiene. Brushing twice a day, flossing, and of course continuing to see your dentist twice a year are all important factors in maintaining your dental crown. We also encourage you to keep away from chewing extremely hard foods, such as candy, to keep your porcelain crown from breaking.

What is the cost of a dental crown?

Each situation is unique and the price depends on the complexity of the situation. We will provide you with all the information you need after Dr. Ras has examined you.

Does my insurance cover the procedure?
